Trump clashes with Democrats in joint address to Congress

Trump speech: President Donald Trump spoke to a house divided Tuesday evening during the longest address to Congress by a president in modern U.S. history. Republicans cheered and chanted "USA," as Democrats appeared to become frustrated at Trump's remarks. As Trump taunted Democrats, several held up round signs that read, "False," "Musk Steals," "Save Medicaid," and "Protect Veterans." Key takeaways >

Representative removed: In a breach of decorum protocol, Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, stood up, shook his walking cane at the president and shouted, “You don’t have a mandate,” briefly halting his speech. Green refused to sit down, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., ordered the Sergeant at Arms to remove him from the chamber. Afterward, Green told reporters it was "worth it" to make his point. Border security: In his speech, Trump declared his administration has launched the “most sweeping border and immigration crackdown in American history.” Trump noted the Laken Riley Act, the first bill he signed after his reelection, mandated the detention of “dangerous criminal aliens." Democratic rebuttal: First-term Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin delivered the Democratic response to Trump's joint address to Congress. Slotkin accused Trump of pushing for an "unprecedented giveaway to his billionaire friends" and not laying out a "credible plan" to lower everyday expenses for Americans. She also warned that democracy is at risk "when the president decides to pick and choose what rules you want to follow, when he ignores court orders and the Constitution itself, or when elected leaders stand by and just let it happen."
